Introspection Introspection is always a difficult process, and even more so when one is still a teenager, struggling to find oneself, but a prominent aspect of my outward personality which keeps floating up in my mind is shyness. I am sitting in my third grade classroom and the bell rings for class to begin. The list of the days assignments is on the board. I begin Reading, which is first, but also my favorite, and quickly finish. I want to move on, but my teacher has other plans. She begins to discuss the reading and randomly calls on the class for input. I did the work and understood it, but I still hope with every cell in my body that she will not pick me. Silently hunched over, staring at my paper, I plead with fate to let me escape. My entreaties denied, the gods mock me as I hear my name. Suddenly, I forget all the dazzling responses I was fervently planning just in case of an emergency such as this. I wonder why I am left surprised by my witless state; this has become routine. Although this fear is common in the classroom setting, it has translated into my personal life. Only recently have I begun to realize that my misgivings about my worth as a human being may not be entirely my fault. My mother has had a tremendous influence on my life. Over the years she has caused me to fear interaction with others (i.e. the world) for fear her type of harsh judgment be passed. Attempting to improve myself, I read a book intended to coax one out of, or help one deal with shyness. It expounded upon a certain type of mother that seeks out to impress upon her childsubconsciously, of coursethat the world is a terrible place, filled with things that must be feared. The purpose of this is for the child to cling to the loving mother, seeking protection from the outside world. The insidious plan backfires once the child is old enough to question his/her behavior as well as that of the parentsa phase we must all go through at some point. As one might imagine, I was relieved to learn that other people have these difficulties, and more importantly, I should not to blame myself. So what is the big deal, you ask? Everyone has parents he or she can point to as less than perfect, right? Well yes, and it should be noted that I am not trying to escape blame for my state of mind by using the wicked mother bit, an alleged scapegoat frequently used in psychology. If I want to change, I must do it myself. I love my mother, and I know most relationships that exist between parents and teenagers are complicated. However, everyone around me can see (and testifies to) the effects of her aggressive, overbearing behavior, so I think there is due cause for my concern. I flee from confrontation outside the home because I am bombarded with it inside the home. Is there no end to this horrible cycle? There may be hope Prompting from recent teachers has helped me begin to find my voice (indeed proven that I have something to say), and calmed the eternal struggle between introversion and recognition, which plagues all shy people. I am certain this growth will continue throughout my last year of high school and through college, and the benefits of your school will further draw me from my shell. I was also able to get a part in the school play. Although I portrayed a sniveling passive character that was constantly berated, I spoke loudly and clearly, tried not to take myself so seriously, and had fun. Dealing With the 'Check 21' Banking Law A sweeping new federal banking law known as â€Å"Check 21† will go into effect beginning October 28, speeding up check processing and putting consumers at risk for more bounced checks and fees, warns Consumers Union. The consumer group is advising consumers to keep a careful eye on their bank statements in the coming months and issued a set of tips to avoid some of the law’s potentially negative impacts. â€Å"Check 21 will be a boon for the banks who will save billions of dollars once it’s fully implemented,† said Gail Hillebrand, Senior Attorney with Consumers Union’s West Coast Office in a CU press release. â€Å"Consumers could end up losing out if they’re not careful and if banks use the new law as an excuse to bounce more checks and collect more fees.† Starting October 28, 2004, consumers will discover that their bank account statements will come with fewer – or perhaps none – of their canceled paper checks, as banks begin to process checks electronically. Consumers will enjoy less â€Å"float,† meaning that the checks they write will clear much faster. Under the new law, checks could clear as early as the same day, but banks won’t be under any obligation to make funds from checks that consumers deposit into their accounts available any sooner. That could mean more bounced checks and more overdraft fees paid by consumers. Banks maintain that the law will be implemented gradually, but consumers will begin to experience its effects in the coming months as more and more banks and merchants take advantage of electronic processing and other provisions of the law. So even if a consumer’s bank doesn’t implement Check 21 right away, another bank or merchant that processes the consumer’s check might choose to do so. That means the original check may never be returned to the consumer’s bank so the consumer won’t receive the canceled paper check in their bank statement. And any check the consumer writes might clear as early as the same day. Consumers Union is advising consumers to review their bank statements carefully to get a better sense of how Check 21 is affecting them and offers the following tips to avoid its potential pitfalls: Expect the checks you write to clear faster, but not your deposited checks: Dont write a check unless the funds are already in your account.The checks you write will clear faster, but banks arent required to speed up the time when they make funds available from checks that you deposit.Most banks will credit checks you deposit into your account in one day if the check is local. Deposits that are made through ATMs can take an extra day to be credited to your account.And out-of-town checks you deposit can take additional days to be credited to your account.The best way to ensure that your paycheck will be deposited quickly is to arrange for direct deposit through your workplace. Social Security check recipients can also arrange for direct deposit. (Note: starting in 2013, Social Security stopped issuing paper benefit checks.)Ask for a â€Å"recredit† right in writing if your bank makes a check processing error: If a check you write is paid twice, or paid for the wrong amount, or something else goes wrong with your checking account, you may have the right to â€Å"recredit† under Check 21. This â€Å"recredit† right means that you are entitled to have the funds returned to your account within 10 business days unless the bank proves that there was no error. If something goes wrong with your checking account, make a written request that your bank recredit the funds to your account. Your bank can avoid the 10-day recredit deadline if you did not receive a substitute check.Ask for a substitute check if there is a problem with your account involving a check: Check 21 restricts recredit to consumers who were provided with a substitute check. If there is a problem with your account involving a check, always ask for a substitute check, which is a special kind of copy of your paper check. If you now get your original checks back, you could ask for an account that returns substitute checks every month. If your bank charges too much for an account that returns substitute checks every month, look for another bank.Find out how your bank plans to treat you under Check 21: Not all banks plan to implement Check 21 in the same manner. Find out if your bank will give you a substitute check if you ask for one and if it plans to charge customers an extra fee for a substitute check. What is popular is not necessarily right Essay We are fortunate enough to live in the best democracy in the world. Our society is fantastically tolerant of the enormous diversity of cultures within it. Democracy is fundamentally about protecting minorities. It is not about enforcing the will of the majority on a law abiding, tax-paying minority: at its best that is bullying, at its worst fascism. The huntsmen are undoubtedly a minority. They are becoming persecuted by people who harbour the same sentiments as racists do about coloured people and homophobics about gays. The root cause of these feelings is simple- IGNORANCE. Tolerance and understanding come from education. Education must overcome the knee-jerk hatred exhibited by many anti-hunt lobbyists. The ignorance of most hunt protestors shines through their weak arguments. I do not hunt, it does not appeal to me enough to warrant the expense- both time and money. I can however see the attraction; comradeship, shared excitement, danger, tradition and a deep love of the countryside and animals. I know people who hunt. You only have to see them with their hounds and horses to know the real affection they have for animals. These are decent people, with families and not the faceless, Range Rover driving snobbish elite that the League Against Cruel Sports would have you believe. Hunting with hounds began because it is an effective way of controlling the population of a pest. It remains the most effective way of doing this. Those who advocate other methods are again showing their ignorance, Im afraid. Shooting. This is not as easy as it sounds. Foxes, we all know, are cunning. They have incredible senses of smell, hearing and sight. Their habits are largely unpredictable. This makes getting into a stable firing position without scaring the fox off very, very difficult. The fox is a small animal, making the humane target area (i. e. that which will kill it instantly) very small indeed. On a Stag its small enough, a fox is almost impossible to shoot cleanly. Please think about the point I made at the start of this, unintentionally long, opinion: lets not persecute a small minority, who do not affect the majority of citizens, just because we dont like what they do. I do not like football, or the hooligans that follow it but I do not rant about banning it because at the end of the day it does not really affect me. By making a ban on fox hunting a manifesto pledge the Labour Party is seeking to deny a large minority their liberty and to destroy a proud community in return for short term political gains. I wonder how much influence the i 1 million, given to Labour by the Animal Political Lobby pressure group, bought? Quite a bit, I bet. Education and Tolerance are what I think is needed here.

     Ã‚  Ã‚   A controversy is rising in America about the nature of sex education in the nation's high schools.   Studies show that 81 percent of American adults support a joint program teaching abstinence and contraception as opposed to an abstinence-only program (Roper 0316946), and 79 percent support contraception education regardless of the level of sexual activity in teenagers (Roper 0340807). The sad fact is, contraception is society's attempt at a "quick fix" for a problem that runs far deeper than the issue of teen sex.   In the debate over the "best safe sex," educators and parents must consider not only the health issues, but must also reevaluate the morality of the nation's young people. Leafing through Planned Parenthood's literature on abortion, contraception, and teen sex, it becomes obvious that Planned Parenthood promotes contraception education, and opposes abstinence education:   "These 'abstinence-until-marriage' programs are an unrealistic attempt to reduce the incidence of teenage pregnancy by using a 'just say no' approach" ("Reducing Teenage Pregnancy").   A good portion of American teenagers agree, illustrated by the fact that 77 percent of women and 85 percent of men will have sexual intercourse before the age of twenty ("Teen Sex and Pregnancy").   They are encouraged to use contraception.   Interestingly, though, teenagers aren't given all the facts about contraception, as is illustrated by Josh McDowell and Bob Hostetler: Not too long ago, I attended a talk during "Safe Sex Week" at the school.   The speaker opened with a statement that sent a rumble of discomfort through the crowd:   "You've been brainwashed!"   When the students settled down, he continued.   "You've had an entire week of 'safe sex' indoctr... ...ssroom."   Time 18 Oct. 2013: n. pag.   Online.   Internet.   URL (4 Nov. 2014).
